Guided Field Sharpener Rises to the Occasion in Mt. Everest Field Test!

GFS EverestDarex’s own, Kyle Knapp, recently tested the GFS in some extreme conditions at Mt. Everest Base Camp. Trekking for 12 days in the Everest region of the Himalayan Mountains to altitudes exceeding 18,000ft, Kyle was able to keep his knife sharp with ease. Having a sharp knife is crucial when in secluded regions. In a standard day, Kyle would use his knife to prepare food, cut rope, clear branches, shave ice to boil into potable water, and to protect himself against yeti attacks. “12 days is a long time to rely on an unsharpened edge. Being able to re-sharpen and hone my blade on the go made life much easier.” The GFS quickly gained popularity on the mountain. “By the 4th day, my group mates started wondering how my knife was working so much better than theirs. It didn’t take long for them to learn to appreciate the importance of a sharp knife. Soon enough, they were all asking for me to sharpen their blades whenever I was touching up my own knife.” The GFS held up to the rigors of travel without issue. “It took some abuse in my day pack and luggage yet never showed any wear.” Hikers are only permitted 15kg of gear on the extremely technical flight into the mountains. The GFS’s light weight, compact size fit into Kyle’s gear bag and day pack without sacrificing space for other items. If the GFS could hold up in these conditions, it will be ready for your next outdoor adventure. Got a great sharpener story? Share it with us!

How often have you put off sharpening a chisel because you’re in the middle of a big project and you didn’t want to take the time? I do it all the time, I’m lazy, in fact I procrastinate sharpening so much that I eventually run out of sharp tools and have to sharpen a whole pile of them at one time. That really sucks!

Dan_the_Man_The_Creator_smallI get a lot of questions about WSKTS abrasives.  After thousands of hours of abrasives research and testing you’d think I know it all.  However, I’m still learning and I promise to keep at it until I really know something.  In this article I’ll walk you through belt selection and offer some recommendations beyond what we put in the box.

Gone_Fishing_2_resizeEach morning we crawled from our tents at 3:30 a.m to be on the water by 5:00. I love this part of real fishing; it takes some effort. Fishing was great for all concerned. Everyone seemed to have the success they wanted. Salmon found their way into coolers, sturgeon gave a good show, and there seemed to be small mouth bass a plenty. After a day of being together, it felt like a bunch of guys that have known each other for years. Fish Camp is made up of a good group of guys, fisherman.
