How to sharpen using the Pocket Knife Sharpener- Including Tips & Tricks!

The Pocket Knife sharpener is one of our lightest sharpeners, coming in at a mere 2.4 ounces it is a great choice for use in the field or out on the trail.

The Pocket Knife Sharpener has two abrasive options, a 320 grit diamond plate to quickly raise a burr and a fine ceramic honing rod for finishing touches.  Angle guides at 25 degrees make this sharpener approachable and easy to use.

To sharpen using the Pocket Knife Sharpener start with the diamond plate.  Place the side of the knife flat on the Guide closest to you so the cutting edge is on the abrasive and PUSH the knife edge away and along the abrasive surface.  Repeat that same stroke on the same side of the knife 5-10 times until a burr is raised.  Once a burr is formed repeat the same number of strokes on the opposite side using the opposing guide and pulling the knife across the abrasive.

Hone your knife using the ceramic rod.  You will use the same motions outlined above when honing however, you will now alternate strokes pushing and pulling the knife across the ceramic.  Alternate strokes 5 per side or until you reach a level of sharpness you are satisfied with.

Tips and Tricks:

  • The Pocket Knife Sharpener is also great for honing curved blades like recurves.  The round ceramic easily follows along the arch making it great for those hard to reach places.
  • If your knife uses larger serrations the ceramic hone can also be used to sharpen and restore the edge.
  • The diamond plate also works great on smaller trail shovels and hatchets.  Use the plate like you would a file and restore an edge or repair minor damage.
