Live and learn. I received my sharpener as a Christmas gift and promptly proceeded to sharpen every kitchen knife in the drawer. About 3/4 of the way through I noticed that the guide had melted. Now I know not to be so aggressive and allow the knives to cool periodically in the process. Just wish the guide was made out of a more substantial material.
